11 Ways to Build Pandemic Resilience
May 1st, 2020 by admin
|What are you doing to ensure that your immune system is strong and your body is resilient?|
As we know, it’s those who have pre-existing conditions that get hit the hardest by COVID-19. Those who are living an anti-inflammatory lifestyle are the most resilient, and will likely either never even know when their body has encountered the virus, or they may take a bit of a hit, but will ultimately get through it. Either way you slice it, Now is a time to be disciplined with your health. It always has been, but sometimes Life really puts things into perspective, doesn’t it?
It’s time to get empowered and stop putting off making changes that will support your wellbeing…if wellbeing is what you want, that is.
It might sound strange, but I know and have met with plenty of people who want to be well, but would rather continue suffering than to change. Now, that’s not a conscious choice. It’s unconscious, even when it appears to be conscious. It’s really hard to see outside of one’s own mind. That’s understandable, and yet, it is important to note that no one in their right mind would actually choose suffering. When we are in our right mind, we choose what feeds our soul and supports us in being vital, powerful, and a beneficial presence.
So, if you’re (unconsciously and innocently) choosing suffering why is that? What must you be believing about yourself in order to CHOOSE suffering and delay wellbeing?
If you’d like to explore this together, please connect with me. This is not a choice you have keep making. You have the power to shift the way you are seeing yourself and treating yourself (and others). This is not just how you are. This is not your destiny, unless you CHOOSE it to be. There are so many other options. At any time, you can CHOOSE to have a powerful shift in perspective and therefore, a powerful shift in your experience of your body, the world, your relationships—all aspects of your experience.
You are powerful! You are master of your mind, and you are master of your body.
Now, that’s not the main thing I want to talk with you about today, but you probably know by now that I don’t suppress the Divine reminders that come through. 🙂 AND, I want to make sure that before I share some steps that you can take to shift your gut health and immune function and build resilience via physical measures, that I speak to the importance of the self-reflection, soul work, and shifts in consciousness that one must be willing to explore, in order for true and sustainable healing to take place.
So, that said, I do want to remind you today, just how resilient you are and can be, with awareness of your innate perfection and wellbeing; AND, I want to offer you a few powerful tweaks that will support your microbiome and immune system, so you can rest assured that you are doing all that you need to be doing to support your own resilience.
Your gut microbiome, the community—ecosystem, rather—of microbes (bacteria, viruses, fungi, & other microorganisms) that live in your gut, are everything to your health. When in the right numbers, balance, and diversity, your microbiome keeps your intestinal cells and lining functioning optimally, manufactures nutrients, supports proper hormone balance, supports mood, supports detoxification, and trains your immune system (of which 70% is in your gut) to be tolerant of your environment—not overly reactive and not under-reactive.
Your good bugs are smart. When thriving, they work together very efficiently to keep potentially pathogenic bugs in check. When there is an infection, they secrete pathogen-specific anti-microbial compounds that kill pathogens.
The world as we have known it in our lifetimes does not support a healthy microbiome.
In fact, it’s downright treacherous for our good bugs. Everywhere we turn, there’s misuse and overuse of antibiotics. There are pesticides and herbicides in and on the food that kill good flora. There’s chlorine in the water, which also kills good flora.
We live in a society that relies heavily on prescription drugs and chemicals, many of which disrupt the gut microbiome as well. And let’s not overlook the fact that we and our kids don’t tend to spend enough time in nature communing with Mother Earth and getting dirty, and industrialized diets are high in fat, sugar, and processed salt, and low in fiber.
We have been living out of balance with Nature, and our bodies and microbiomes directly reflect this. Modern-day life is a set-up for gut-related issues, like autoimmunity, compromised immune function, connective tissue diseases, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, skin conditions, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, thyroid disorders, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, anxiety, depression, and more.
Many of my nutrition clients who come to me for the aforementioned issues are also initially struggling with catching every cold and flu that comes along, and this is always one of the most dramatic improvements they report after a short time of working together.
If we want to be resilient, it is crystal clear that we have to be our own advocates, while working to co-create policies and communities that make our world a safe, healthy, happy, and microbiome-friendly place to live.
Right now, in this pandemic, and as we begin to slowly reintegrate into being physically close again, the keys to staying well are:
a.) Transforming your experience of fear and stress with awareness, and
b.) Supporting and healing the gut and rebalancing the microbiome; and therefore, supporting optimal immune function.
If you have ANY kind of underlying or preexisting condition, please know that your immune system is going to be compromised to some degree, because it’s all connected.
I am not telling you this to scare you.
I am telling you this because I want you to know that you can change your destiny. You can build resilience. You can harness and allow your innate wellbeing to absolutely radiate, if you know how, and if you have the courage to think and live differently in this world of illusion and distortion.
We know that the physical key to balancing immune function is restoring the microbiome and overall gut health. This is not a one-stop shop, it’s a multi-pronged mind-body-spirit approach.
Here are some of my top recommendations. Pick one of these today and keep adding gradually:
1.) First and foremost, learn to connect with your emotions, cultivate self-awareness, and manage your vibrational frequency. Acute and chronic stress that isn’t managed properly with awareness, creates inflammatory shifts in the composition of your microbiome. As a Transformative Spiritual Coach and Energy Healer, I can also help you with this foundational aspect of gut restoration.
2.) Eat lots of colorful plant foods. Aim for 40 different kinds of plant foods each week. A diet diverse in plant foods leads to microbiome diversity, which you definitely want.
3.) Include moderate amounts of soaked and/or sprouted whole grains and legumes in your diet. These are excellent food for your microbiome.
4.) Eat resistant starch, which acts as a prebiotic that feeds good bacteria and supports blood sugar metabolism. Cooked and chilled potatoes, overnight oats, and underripe bananas are excellent sources.
5.) Take it easy on the saturated fat, coconut oil, and large amounts of oil, in general. When overdone, research shows these fats can promote overgrowth of the wrong bugs that then increase the occurrence of endotoxemia. This is when bacterial toxins—namely endotoxin or LPS from gram negative bacteria—get through the gut lining and enter the blood stream, where they set off a cascade of systemic inflammation. This systemic inflammation caused by endotoxemia is a key (and overlooked) root cause of obesity, autoimmunity, mood disorders, heart disease, and much much more.
6.) If tolerated, eat lacto-fermented veggies like sauerkraut and Kim chi daily with meals. Start with a tiny amount and work your way up to a couple of forkfuls with each meal. Make sure these are refrigerated when you buy them and not made with vinegar. These are also fairly simple and cheap to make.
7.) Play in the dirt. Garden, camp, hike—get up close and personal with Mother Earth/Pachamama, on the regular; and don’t overdo cleanliness. In fact, exposure is fundamental to nurturing a healthy immune response.
8.) Avoid or minimize alcohol to 1 drink or less per week, or even per month.
9.)Avoid artificial sweeteners, especially Sucralose (aka: Splenda), which alters the function of beneficial microbes. How well your microbes function/do their jobs is everything.
10.) Do a plant-based cleanse in the Spring and Fall of each year. I offer Mind-Body Detox at these times.
11). And finally, especially if you have digestive issues, autoimmunity, or any underlying chronic or inflammatory condition, I suggest taking a high-quality probiotic–but not just any probiotic.
I’m going to share with you the probiotic that I have been taking myself for about 5 years. It completely expedited my gut-healing journey. I no longer suffer from IBS-D, no longer have eczema and acne, and I continue to be free of granuloma annulare skin lesions (5 years and counting!). I don’t get sick very often and when I do, I tend to move through it very quickly. I am also becoming more and more tolerant of the foods that have long been triggers of inflammation for me. Now, I know that this is not just an effect of the probiotic. I know that without prioritizing the things I shared above, it wouldn’t be as effective for me, so there is that. However, this probiotic has been proven highly effective, even for people who are eating a Standard American Diet and make no changes at all. It has also been shown to significantly reduce serum endotoxin by 42%, 5 hours after a high-fat high- calorie meal, in comparison to a 36% increase in serum endotoxin at the same time point, in those receiving a placebo of encapsulated rice flour. See the study here. So, what is this probiotic?
