Are you a little too ready for 2016?

Are you a little too ready for 2016? What I mean by that is, do you feel that once 2015 is over and 2016 begins, that you will somehow miraculously be inspired to eat better, think better and move better? Does it seem right now that 2016 will bring you the happiness and success that you didn’t experience in 2015? Is that what you’re hoping for? If it is, then I would like to suggest a break in your thought pattern and point out that your happiness, as well as your ability to heal yourself both physically and emotionally, are all created within your mind. These are not found by forcing yourself to get through a detox or a boot camp, as helpful as these things can be. You possess the power to heal yourself and to create a happy existence, right here and now. True happiness and healing do not come simply with a new year or a Monday. They come when we consciously step back and observe our thoughts, rather than seeing the world and our experience through our thoughts. We are all human, which means that we spend a lot of time unconsciously operating under the belief that our internal experience is created as a result of external circumstances. For example, how many times have you declared that you’ll be happy when you get your dream job, lose 10 pounds, clear up your skin, find love, move to the city of your dreams, etc.? While these things are wonderful, the truth is, your happiness will not be found out there (which includes your physical appearance). Experience is only created from the inside-out. No exceptions. When we choose to see our thoughts for what they are (which is that they are just thoughts), rather than as reality, we begin to make shifts in our outlook, which radically changes our experience on all levels—mentally, emotionally and physically.

If thoughts are just thoughts, then why do mine have so much power over me?

We give our thoughts power. We decide to encourage them and to make them our reality. Without your permission, the thought or thoughts that seemingly govern your existence on any given day, are nothing more than passing clouds in the sky of your mind. It is only when you decide to latch onto a thought and give it your attention and energy that it becomes your reality. The trick is to become conscious of the fact that the choice is yours to make. When you begin to feel out of alignment, which may look like anxiety, depression, impulsiveness, guilt, blaming, judgement, jealousy, comparison, over-indulgence, restricting, etc., this is your cue to stop and observe your thoughts. Let the feelings wash over you. Feel free to fully experience them for as long as you need, and when you’ve had enough, make the choice to let go of the misaligned thought and put your energy into a thought that brings you into alignment with your authentic nature, which is joy, peace, gratitude and expansiveness. It’s that simple, but in my experience (both as a coach and as a client), having a coach to bring you back to this truth and provoke you to acknowledge it each time you forget and get caught up in feeling your misaligned thinking, is invaluable for  personal growth and healing. The Buddha said that letting go is a choice we must make repeatedly. Be prepared to come back to the truth of who you are, as well as to forget it, over and over. Eventually, if you continue to consciously make the choice to let go of the limiting stories and lines of thinking over and over, you will find that your mind begins to stay in alignment more and more. At the same time, you will find that you suffer less and less.
